What is it that makes a religion, a religion? Must it involve a deity or deities? If so, Buddhism and some forms of Hinduism are out. Some have remarked that defining religion is as easy as nailing Jell-O to a tree. Philosopher and theologian, Paul Tillich, defines religion as "the state of being grasped by an ultimate concern, a concern which qualifies all other concerns as preliminary and which itself contains the answer to the question of the meaning of our life". This definition is, admittedly, broad; so broad it would encompass even secular activity as religious activity. For the purposes of this blog, that's the definition we're going to run with. But, don't expect me to advocate for your tax-exempt status.
